Spotted
The Large-billed Woodcreeper is a very large and robust woodcreeper characterized by its exceptionally heavy bill. It uses its powerful bill to extract large prey from bark.
Where to spot
Widespread in humid lowland forests and woodlands of South America, primarily in the Amazon basin, Chaco, and Cerrado regions.
How to spot
Look for its impressive size and notably large, heavy bill as it climbs tree trunks. Its deep, resonant vocalizations are also a key identifier.
When to spot
Active year-round during daylight hours. Often observed foraging on large tree trunks or dead trees from morning to afternoon.
Its massive bill, one of the largest among woodcreepers, allows it to forage on larger insects and even small vertebrates, making it an apex predator within its niche.
