The Rufous-tailed Rock Thrush is a striking, medium-sized migratory bird of rocky habitats. The male boasts a vibrant blue head, orange-rufous underparts, and dark wings, known for its melodious song.
Where to spot
Breeds in mountainous and rocky areas across Southern Europe, North Africa, and Central Asia. Winters in sub-Saharan Africa. Found in alpine pastures, scree slopes, and rocky hills.
How to spot
Scan rocky outcrops, scree slopes, and alpine pastures for this distinctive bird. Look for the male's bright colors and listen for its fluty, thrush-like song. Females are duller, mottled brown.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (May-July) in its mountain habitats. Also seen during spring migration (April-May) and autumn migration (August-September) in various open landscapes.
