Spotted
The Rufous-tailed Miner is a terrestrial bird of arid montane habitats, named for its distinct rufous tail. It forages on the ground, often running swiftly across open areas.
Where to spot
Endemic to the arid montane scrub, rocky slopes, and semi-desert areas of the central Peruvian Andes.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground in open, rocky habitats. Its rufous tail, especially when it takes flight, is the most obvious identification mark.
When to spot
Active year-round, primarily during the day. Most active during the cooler parts of the morning and late afternoon.
Its rufous tail is particularly striking in flight or when the bird bobs its tail, making it a good diagnostic feature in its otherwise drab surroundings.
