Spotted
The Dusky Leaftosser is a rather uniform, dark brown terrestrial bird, known for its secretive habits and its method of foraging by flipping leaf litter. It blends well into the dim forest understory.
Where to spot
Found in the understory of humid montane and foothill forests along the Andes, from Colombia south to Peru and Bolivia.
How to spot
Listen for the characteristic rustling sounds of leaves being tossed on the forest floor. Patiently watch for movement in dense, dark undergrowth, especially near fallen logs or roots.
When to spot
Active year-round, primarily during daylight hours. Its activity may increase after rain, when insects are more accessible.
Distinguishing it from similar leaftosser species often requires careful observation of subtle plumage differences and listening for its specific vocalizations.
