Spotted
The Coral-billed Nuthatch is a unique and distinctive bird endemic to Madagascar, characterized by its long, thin, coral-red bill. Its plumage is generally grey and white.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid eastern rainforests of Madagascar, primarily found in the mid to upper canopy of mature primary forests.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive coral-red bill as it forages on tree trunks and large branches. Listen for its soft, often repeated calls. It can be elusive high in the canopy.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active throughout the day, often seen moving along tree trunks and branches.
Unlike true nuthatches that often climb head-first down trees, the Coral-billed Nuthatch uses its specialized bill to probe into bark crevices for insects, similar to a treecreeper.
