Widodo's Myzomela is a recently described species of honeyeater, endemic to the remote island of Rote in Indonesia. It is a small bird known for its distinct plumage and vocalizations.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Rote in the Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia. It inhabits acacia-eucalyptus woodlands, savanna, and cultivated areas.
How to spot
This is a small myzomela with a reddish head and breast, contrasting with a dusky body and pale belly. It is morphologically similar to other regional Myzomelas but distinguished by its unique calls and limited range. Look for it actively feeding in flowering trees.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, foraging for nectar and insects. As a resident species within its limited island range, it can be observed year-round.
This species was named after Joko Widodo, the 7th President of Indonesia, in recognition of his efforts in environmental conservation.
