Spotted
Ross's Snow Bunting, often referred to as McKay's Bunting, is a very pale, Arctic breeding bird, closely related to the common Snow Bunting. It has extensive white plumage.
Where to spot
Breeds exclusively on St. Matthew and Hall Islands in the Bering Sea. Winters along coastal western Alaska. Highly specialized to extreme Arctic coastal environments.
How to spot
Look for very white, plump buntings on bare ground or snow-covered beaches. Distinguish from Snow Bunting by its significantly greater extent of white plumage.
When to spot
Observation is very challenging due to its remote breeding grounds. Wintering birds can be sought along Alaskan coastlines from late fall to early spring.
