Spotted
The Rock Sandpiper is a stocky, medium-sized shorebird with dull plumage, well-adapted to the harsh, rocky coastal environments of the North Pacific. It has a slightly drooped bill.
Where to spot
Breeds in coastal Alaska, the Aleutian Islands, and parts of eastern Siberia. Winters primarily along the coasts of Alaska, British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest.
How to spot
Look for it on rocky beaches, breakwaters, and intertidal zones. Its preference for rocky habitats and its darker, duller plumage distinguish it from other small sandpipers (peeps).
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in much of its Alaskan range, and during the non-breeding season further south. Breeding behavior is seen in summer.

Unlike many migratory shorebirds, Rock Sandpipers often winter in very cold, ice-bound coastal areas, demonstrating remarkable resilience to harsh conditions.
