Spotted
The Restless Flycatcher is a lively and distinctive passerine bird native to Australia and parts of New Guinea. Known for its agile flight and unique vocalizations, it is a charismatic inhabitant of open woodlands and forests. Its hovering flight and 'scissors grinder' call make it easily recognizable.
Where to spot
Found across mainland Australia, particularly in eastern and southeastern regions, and also in southern New Guinea. It prefers open woodlands, forests, savannas, and even suburban gardens with scattered trees.
How to spot
Look for its characteristic hovering flight as it snatches insects from the air or foliage. Its glossy black upperparts, white underparts, and dark bill are key visual identifiers. Listen for its distinctive, mechanical-sounding call, which is the most reliable way to locate it.
When to spot
Generally observed year-round in its native range. Best seen during the warmer months when insects are plentiful, often most active during early mornings and late afternoons.

The Restless Flycatcher gets its alternative name 'Scissors Grinder' from its distinctive, grating call that sounds remarkably like a pair of scissors being sharpened or a grinding stone.
