The Red Siskin is a stunningly beautiful, critically endangered finch known for the male's vibrant red plumage with black wings and cap. It is native to northern South America.
Where to spot
Historically found in northern Venezuela and northeastern Colombia. Current wild populations are extremely small and fragmented, primarily in remote, dry forest and scrub areas.
How to spot
If fortunate enough to be in its range, look for flashes of bright red in dry forest or scrubland. Support conservation efforts rather than trying to find them in the wild.
When to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity. Any sighting would be significant. Breeding usually occurs during the dry season.
Once a common cage bird, its striking coloration led to extensive trapping, pushing it to the brink of extinction in the wild. Conservation efforts are now critical.
