Spotted
Sclater's Chlorophonia is a small, vivid bird distinguished by its bright green plumage, yellow underparts, and a blue hindneck band. It is a denizen of humid montane forests in South America.
Where to spot
Found in the humid montane forests of the Andes, ranging from northern Colombia and Venezuela south through Ecuador and Peru.
How to spot
Look for this bird in the mid to upper canopy of montane forests. Its brilliant green and yellow plumage can be surprisingly camouflaged. Listen for its distinctive, often high-pitched, whistled calls, which can help pinpoint its location.
When to spot
A year-round resident. Best chances for observation are during the drier months when fruiting trees may be more concentrated, or in the early morning when the birds are most active.
This species, like many chlorophonias, has a diet heavily reliant on fruits, particularly berries from various plant families, making it an important disperser of seeds within its ecosystem.
