Spotted
The Plain Mountain Finch is a drab, streaky brown finch adapted to high-altitude environments. It lacks the bright colors of many other finches.
Where to spot
Widespread across the mountain ranges of Central Asia, including the Himalayas, Tibet, and parts of Russia and China. It inhabits alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and scree fields above the tree line.
How to spot
Scan open, rocky alpine tundra. They often forage on the ground in small flocks. Their streaky plumage provides excellent camouflage, so look for movement.
When to spot
Present year-round in its high-altitude habitat. Easier to spot during warmer summer months, but can be found even in winter if snow cover is not too deep.
