Spotted
The Pied Puffbird is a small, striking species, characterized by its bold black and white striped and spotted plumage. It is a common and widespread puffbird in Central and South American forests.
Where to spot
Widespread across Central and South America, from Honduras to Bolivia and southern Brazil. It inhabits humid primary and secondary lowland rainforests, often at forest edges, clearings, and along waterways.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive black and white striped plumage. It often perches upright on exposed branches in the mid-story or lower canopy. Listen for its soft, whistled calls, which can be hard to pinpoint in dense forest.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, but often spends long periods perched motionless. Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon when foraging. It is a resident species.
