Spotted
The Perija Metaltail is a small, vibrant hummingbird endemic to a specific high-altitude mountain range. Males feature a brilliant iridescent green throat and a distinctive metallic-sheened tail, typical of the Metaltail genus. It is a highly specialized cloud forest inhabitant.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Serranía de Perijá mountain range, on the border between Colombia and Venezuela. It inhabits humid montane forests, cloud forests, and elfin forests at elevations generally between 2,300 and 3,500 meters (7,500-11,500 feet).
How to spot
Look for its overall dark green body plumage, a brilliant iridescent green gorget (throat patch) in males, and a metallic, often coppery-red, tail that flashes in the light. Its relatively short, straight bill is typical for Metaltails. Observe it feeding on small flowers or perching quietly within dense forest undergrowth.
When to spot
Active throughout the year during daylight hours. Observation is most productive during dry periods when floral resources are more abundant and the birds are actively foraging.

This species has a remarkably restricted range, confined to a single isolated mountain chain, making it particularly vulnerable to habitat changes and climate impacts.
