Spotted
The Black Myzomela is a small, entirely dark honeyeater found in New Guinea and several surrounding islands. Its uniform black plumage distinguishes it from other myzomelas.
Where to spot
Widespread across New Guinea (both Indonesian Papua and Papua New Guinea) and many satellite islands, including the Aru Islands and parts of the Bismarck Archipelago. It inhabits forests, forest edges, and gardens.
How to spot
Identify by its small size, slender, decurved bill, and entirely glossy black plumage in both sexes. Look for its active movements as it probes flowers in the canopy or mid-story. Listen for its high-pitched, thin, reedy calls.
When to spot
Active during the day, feeding primarily on nectar, but also small insects and occasional fruits. It is a resident species, observable year-round wherever flowering plants are present.

Despite its simple coloration, the Black Myzomela plays a vital ecological role by pollinating a wide variety of native plants as it feeds on nectar.
