Spotted
The Mangrove Honeyeater is a medium-sized honeyeater highly specialized for mangrove habitats along the northeastern Australian coast. It has a streaked throat and a yellow ear patch.
Where to spot
Mangrove forests exclusively along the coast of northeastern Queensland and southeastern New Guinea.
How to spot
Focus efforts in mangrove habitats. Look for its streaked throat and yellow ear patch. Listen for its distinctive, often loud calls, which help in locating it within the dense mangrove canopy.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during low tide when birds are more active in the exposed mudflats or during high tide perched higher in mangroves.

Its adaptation to the saline environment of mangroves allows it to exploit a food source and habitat that many other bird species cannot.
