Spotted
The Pacific Elaenia is a subtle and often difficult-to-distinguish small flycatcher, similar in appearance to other elaenias but with subtle plumage differences. It inhabits dry and humid forests along the Pacific coast.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Pacific lowlands and foothills of western Ecuador and northwestern Peru, found in both dry and humid forest types.
How to spot
Requires careful distinction from other elaenias, especially by its specific calls. Look for it in the mid-story of coastal forests. Patience and attention to vocalizations are key.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active throughout the day, often more vocal in the mornings.
This species was recently split from the Grey-capped Elaenia, with primary distinctions based on vocalizations and subtle genetic variations.
