Spotted
The Oriental Pratincole is a migratory pratincole similar in appearance and behavior to the Collared Pratincole. It is known for its aerial hunting of insects over open grasslands and wetlands.
Where to spot
Breeds from Pakistan across India, Southeast Asia, to southern China, and into northern Australia. Winters in India, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and Australia.
How to spot
Similar to the Collared Pratincole, look for its swift, tern-like flight. Distinguish it from Collared by subtle plumage differences, particularly its slightly shorter wing projection beyond the tail when perched, and typically more rufous underwing coverts. Identification is often by range.
When to spot
Breeding season is from April to July. Migrates south from August to October and returns north in March-April.
