Spotted
This rare hybrid combines features of the Greater White-fronted Goose and the striking Red-breasted Goose. Expect a blend of the white facial patch typical of the White-fronted with hints of the rich chestnut and black patterns of the Red-breasted.
Where to spot
Potentially in areas where their migratory routes or wintering grounds overlap in Eurasia, though wild hybrids are very uncommon. More likely to be seen in zoological collections or semi-wild populations.
How to spot
Carefully scan flocks of geese for individuals that do not quite match any known species. Look for a combination of the white forehead patch, orange legs, and mixed reddish-brown breast and dark neck markings.
When to spot
During migration or wintering periods if observed in the wild. Otherwise, year-round in captive settings where these species coexist.
Given the contrasting appearances of its parent species, this hybrid can be visually distinctive, often showcasing an intriguing mix of chest coloration and facial patterns.
