Spotted
The Mountain Bee-eater is a colorful inhabitant of Afromontane forests and open woodlands at higher elevations. This relatively small bee-eater is distinguished by its green plumage, yellow throat, and a black eye-stripe.
Where to spot
Distributed in scattered populations across East Africa, typically in highland areas from Ethiopia south to Malawi, inhabiting montane forests, clearings, and cultivated lands.
How to spot
Scan the edges of montane forests or clearings where they often perch conspicuously. Look for their quick, acrobatic flights as they snatch insects mid-air. Their 'prruup' call is a good indicator of their presence.
When to spot
Accessible year-round in its highland habitat. Activity is generally highest in the early mornings and late afternoons.

True to its name, this species prefers mountainous and highland regions, making it one of the few bee-eaters commonly found at altitudes where cooler temperatures prevail.
