Spotted
The Fire-eyed Diucon is a striking flycatcher of southern South America, named for its intense red eyes. Its plumage is a soft grey with a paler belly.
Where to spot
Open woodlands, scrub, agricultural areas, and gardens in Chile and western Argentina. Some populations move northward in austral winter.
How to spot
Focus on the vibrant red eyes, which are its most prominent feature. It often perches on exposed branches, wires, or fences, sallying out to catch insects. Its simple calls are also helpful.
When to spot
Year-round resident in much of its range. Best observed during the austral spring and summer when breeding and more vocal.
