Spotted
The Maroon-backed Accentor is a strikingly plumaged accentor with a rich maroon-brown back, found in the high-altitude forests of the Himalayas and adjacent regions. It is often a shy bird of dense undergrowth.
Where to spot
Himalayas (Nepal, Bhutan, northeast India), Myanmar, and southern China. Inhabits dense rhododendron and bamboo undergrowth in broadleaf and mixed forests at high elevations.
How to spot
This is a notoriously difficult bird to observe due to its preferred dense habitat and shy nature. Listen for its distinctive calls and watch for brief glimpses as it forages on the ground or in low vegetation.
When to spot
Year-round resident, but often easier to spot during the breeding season (spring/summer) when it may be more vocal and active.
