The Mariqua Sunbird is a common and widespread species across much of Africa, with males displaying brilliant iridescent green and purple plumage, and a distinctive red breast band. It is often a garden visitor.
Where to spot
Widely distributed in sub-Saharan Africa, from Eritrea and Ethiopia south to South Africa, inhabiting savannas, woodlands, acacia scrub, and gardens.
How to spot
Easily spotted at flowering plants and shrubs, even in urban environments. Its iridescent plumage flashes in the sun, and its lively, high-pitched calls are often heard.
When to spot
Active throughout the year. Most visible during early mornings and late afternoons. Look for it particularly during flowering seasons.
This sunbird is known for its opportunistic feeding behavior, not only consuming nectar but also actively foraging for small insects and spiders, especially when feeding young.
