Spotted
The Mantled Hawk is a medium-sized raptor of South America, named for its distinctive black 'mantle' across its back and wings. It is a secretive forest specialist.
Where to spot
Found in southeastern Brazil and northeastern Argentina. It primarily inhabits tropical moist montane and lowland forests, including the Atlantic Forest.
How to spot
Requires patient searching within dense forests. Look for its distinctive black upperparts contrasted with a white underside. Listen for calls which can give away its position.
When to spot
Observations are scarce due to its secretive nature and dense habitat. Likely active during daylight hours, but specific patterns are not well documented.
This hawk's striking black mantle provides effective camouflage against the dark shadows and foliage of the deep forest, allowing it to remain hidden while hunting.
