Spotted
The Makira Cuckoo is a distinct cuckoo species endemic to the Solomon Islands, particularly Makira Island. It is a relatively small, dull-colored cuckoo found within the island's forested habitats.
Where to spot
Endemic to Makira Island (and possibly surrounding smaller islands) in the Solomon Islands. It inhabits tropical moist forests, especially in the interior of the island, from lowlands to montane areas.
How to spot
Listen for its specific vocalizations, as it is often heard before it is seen. Look carefully within the dense forest canopy and mid-story, as its dull plumage can make it blend in well with the shadows.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round on Makira Island. Its vocal activity is likely to be highest during the breeding season, which often coincides with periods of increased rainfall and insect abundance.
Its restricted distribution to a single island group makes the Makira Cuckoo a prime example of island endemism, and its survival is closely linked to the conservation of its unique island habitat.
