Spotted
The Little Grassbird is a common and widespread species found across Australia, New Zealand, and parts of New Guinea. It is a secretive bird of wetlands, often found in reeds and sedges.
Where to spot
Widespread across Australia, New Zealand, and parts of New Guinea, inhabiting reedbeds, sedgelands, and dense aquatic vegetation along lakes, rivers, and swamps.
How to spot
Focus on dense wetland vegetation. Listen for its distinctive, often nasal and mechanical-sounding reeling song. Look for subtle movements low in the reeds, as it rarely perches in the open.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Most vocal and detectable during the breeding season (spring/summer in its respective hemisphere), especially in the mornings and evenings.
Its monotonous, frog-like 'reeling' song is a characteristic sound of many Australian wetlands, though the bird itself is rarely seen.
