Spotted
An extremely rare hybrid, mixing the characteristics of the smaller, dark-eyed Lesser White-fronted Goose (Anser erythropus) with the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis), resulting in a unique and often ambiguous appearance.
Where to spot
Due to the rarity of the Lesser White-fronted Goose, this hybrid is exceptionally uncommon and most likely seen in areas where captive birds might interbreed or during migration in specific European wintering sites.
How to spot
Identifying this hybrid is challenging. Look for a smaller overall size, a grey-brown body, possibly with some belly barring, combined with the Barnacle's black neck and white face. The yellow eye-ring of the Lesser White-fronted Goose might be present, but perhaps faint.
When to spot
Observation is highly opportunistic, typically during the autumn and winter periods when geese gather in their non-breeding ranges.
