Where to spot
Breeds in the grasslands of the Great Plains of North America (Canada and U.S.). Winters in the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Found in shortgrass and mixed-grass prairies.
How to spot
Scan open grasslands. Look for the male's all-black body with prominent white wing patches. Listen for its musical, bubbling song delivered in flight.
