Spotted
The Kon Ka Kinh Laughingthrush is a relatively recently described species or subspecies, closely related to the Rufous-chinned Laughingthrush, and endemic to a specific national park in Vietnam. It is a shy bird, found in dense montane forest. Its existence highlights the unique biodiversity of the Annamite mountain range.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Kon Ka Kinh National Park in central Vietnam, specifically in the Kon Tum and Gia Lai provinces. It inhabits montane evergreen forests, particularly dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets at high elevations.
How to spot
Requires targeted birding within Kon Ka Kinh National Park. Listen for its calls, which may be similar to Rufous-chinned Laughingthrush but distinct. Be patient and watch for movements in very dense undergrowth.
When to spot
Present year-round in its restricted habitat. Early mornings are the best time to hear its vocalizations, which are often the primary way to detect its presence.
This species was only formally described in 2008 (or elevated to species status), underscoring how new bird species continue to be discovered or recognized in remote and biodiverse regions.
