Found in East Asia, including Japan, Korea, and parts of China and Southeast Asia. Inhabits woodlands, open forests, and rural areas. It is a highly migratory species.

Listen for its characteristic call at night. During the day, scan for its highly camouflaged form resting on the ground or low branches, often in shaded areas. Patience and good optics are essential.
