Spotted
The Jobi Manucode is a medium-sized, glossy black bird-of-paradise with a purplish or greenish iridescence and a short, straight tail. Both sexes are similarly plumaged. It is a frugivorous and insectivorous bird, often found in the canopy of its forest habitat.
Where to spot
Endemic to Yapen Island and northern New Guinea. It primarily inhabits tropical lowland forests and hill forests.
How to spot
Look for its glossy black plumage with iridescent sheen and its relatively short, straight tail. Listen for its loud, resonant, and often mournful calls that can help pinpoint its location in the canopy.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observable year-round. Often more vocal in the early morning.
While lacking the elaborate plumes of other Birds-of-Paradise, the Manucodes are known for their unique vocalizations and subtle iridescence, which becomes apparent in good light.
