Hoffmann's Hummingbird is a vibrant species native to Costa Rica, known for its iridescent green plumage and the subtle blue or violet tones on its crown and upperparts. It is an active and territorial bird.
Where to spot
Endemic to Costa Rica, where it is found in the central and Pacific slopes, inhabiting humid to semi-deciduous forests, forest edges, clearings, coffee plantations, and gardens from lowlands to mid-elevations.
How to spot
Look for its glossy green body with a bluer crown and rump, and a distinctive dark, slightly decurved bill. It can be seen feeding at tubular flowers, including those at hummingbird feeders, or perched on exposed branches.
When to spot
Present throughout the year in its range. Actively feeds during the day, especially prominent at dawn and dusk. Its presence is often noted by its characteristic vocalizations.
Male hummingbirds often perform elaborate aerial display flights to attract mates, showcasing their agility and iridescent plumage in a spectacular fashion.
