Where to spot
Widespread across Central and East Africa, from Sudan to Kenya and Uganda. Inhabits savannas, open woodlands, grasslands, and cultivated areas, often near water.
How to spot
Look for its brilliant yellow plumage and extensive black mask (in breeding males). They are often seen in noisy groups around colonial nesting sites. Listen for their constant, buzzing calls.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Breeding activity is most prominent during the rainy season, when males are in their brightest plumage and are actively building nests.
Named after Theodor von Heuglin, a German explorer and ornithologist. This species often builds its nests in thorny trees, providing some protection against predators.
