Spotted
The Small Solomons Whistler is a subtly colored bird found in the Solomon Islands, often difficult to spot due to its drab plumage. It typically inhabits the lower and mid-story of primary forests.
Where to spot
Found in the Solomon Islands, including Bougainville (part of PNG but biogeographically part of Solomons), Isabel, Choiseul, and possibly others. Inhabits lowland and montane rainforests.
How to spot
Look for its overall dull olive-brown plumage, sometimes with a paler throat. Listen for its distinctive whistled calls, which can be varied and melodious, typical of the family, helping to pinpoint its location.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Active throughout the day, with calls most prominent in early mornings and late afternoons.
Its muted plumage allows it to blend seamlessly into the dense forest undergrowth, making its characteristic whistled calls the primary means of detection.
