The Guadalcanal Dwarf Kingfisher is a tiny and beautiful kingfisher endemic to Guadalcanal Island in the Solomon Islands. It features brilliant blue upperparts, rufous underparts, and a reddish bill.
Where to spot
Endemic to Guadalcanal Island in the Solomon Islands. Inhabits lowland and hill forests, often near small streams or damp ravines.
How to spot
Look for its minute form perching low in the dense forest undergrowth. Its bright colors can be elusive, but a patient search might reveal it. Listen for its high-pitched, quick calls.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Active during daylight hours. Best observed in the mornings and late afternoons.
Like other Ceyx kingfishers, it often nests in burrows dug into earthen banks along forest streams, a secure nesting site away from ground predators.
