Spotted
This subspecies of Common Eider (Somateria mollissima faeroeensis) is endemic to the Faroe Islands, adapted to its North Atlantic coastal environment. It shares the robust build and diving prowess of other Common Eider populations.
Where to spot
Exclusively found around the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic.
How to spot
Look for them along the rocky coastlines and sheltered bays of the Faroe Islands. Identification is primarily by location, as plumage differences from the nominate subspecies are subtle and best discerned by experts or under ideal viewing conditions.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in their coastal habitat. Breeding takes place in spring and early summer on rocky islands and skerries.
The Faroe Islands have a long tradition of eiderdown harvesting, deeply intertwined with the local culture and the eider's presence, providing a valuable and sustainable resource.
