Spotted
This common hybrid arises from the interbreeding of the large, sturdy Greylag Goose (Anser anser) and the familiar Canada Goose (Branta canadensis). Individuals often display a mix of their parents' robust build and plumage patterns.
Where to spot
Very common in urban parks, ponds, lakes, and agricultural areas across Europe, and increasingly in North America, where both species are present, often as resident populations.
How to spot
Look for a large goose with an intermediate appearance: a grayish-brown body (like a Greylag) but with a black head and neck and a white chinstrap (like a Canada Goose). The bill might be orange or pinkish-orange, often darker at the base, and the legs are typically orange.
When to spot
Year-round in most areas, as both species frequently form resident, non-migratory populations in human-altered landscapes.

The Greylag Goose is the wild ancestor of most domestic goose breeds in Europe and Asia, making this hybrid a frequent occurrence where domestic Greylags mingle with wild or feral Canada Geese.
