Spotted
This is a common hybrid resulting from interbreeding between the ubiquitous Mallard and the American Black Duck. These birds often display intermediate plumage features, blending the distinct characteristics of their parent species.
Where to spot
Found across North America, especially in the eastern regions where both parent species are prevalent. Look in freshwater wetlands, ponds, marshes, and slow-moving rivers, including urban parks.
How to spot
Look for a bird that combines the Mallard's distinct green head (often muted) and white neck ring (often incomplete) with the darker body plumage and yellowish bill of an American Black Duck. The speculum typically lacks the clear white borders seen on a pure Mallard.
When to spot
Year-round in resident areas, and during spring/fall migration in transient areas. They are frequently encountered in mixed flocks with other dabbling ducks.

Mallard x American Black Duck hybrids are particularly common in eastern North America, and their widespread occurrence is a significant factor in the conservation challenges faced by pure American Black Duck populations due to genetic dilution.
