Spotted
The Grey Cuckooshrike is a widespread and variable species found across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by its plain grey plumage and rather slender build.
Where to spot
Found in a wide variety of wooded habitats, including savannah woodlands, open forests, acacia scrub, and cultivated areas, across sub-Saharan Africa.
How to spot
Look for them perched on branches in open woodlands. Listen for their distinctive, often whistling calls. Observe their undulating flight pattern.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often seen singly or in pairs. It is a resident species, observable year-round in most of its range.
The 'cuckooshrike' name refers to both their often grey, cuckoo-like plumage and their shrike-like bill and diet of insects, although they are not related to either cuckoos or shrikes.
