Spotted
The Greater Yellow Finch is a large and robust yellow finch found in the southern Andes, known for its bright plumage and strong, conical bill.
Where to spot
High-altitude grasslands and shrublands of the southern Andes, primarily in central Chile and western Argentina, typically between 1,500 and 3,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for its larger size and intensely yellow plumage. It typically forages on the ground, often in open fields. Listen for its loud, clear calls, which can carry across open landscapes.
When to spot
Year-round resident. More conspicuous during the breeding season (austral spring/summer) when males are more vocal.
This species is one of the larger yellow finches, often seen foraging on the ground in open, grassy areas, sometimes forming mixed flocks with other finches, particularly outside the breeding season.
