Spotted
This hybrid combines the speckled belly and white forehead patch of the Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) with the striking black and white face and neck of the Barnacle Goose (Branta leucopsis).
Where to spot
Most likely observed in Europe where both species occur, particularly in wetland areas or agricultural fields during migration or winter. Rare in the wild due to differing breeding grounds.
How to spot
Look for a goose with a grey-brown body that may show some belly barring, combined with the distinctive black neck and white face of the Barnacle. The white forehead patch of the White-fronted Goose might be present but reduced or indistinct.
When to spot
Best seen during the autumn and winter months (October-April) when geese gather in their non-breeding habitats.
