Spotted
Gray's Grasshopper Warbler is a migratory species breeding in East Asia and wintering in Southeast Asia. It is a secretive bird, often found in dense, wet grasslands and marshlands.
Where to spot
Breeds in eastern Siberia, northern China, Korea, and Japan, typically in dense wet grasslands and marshy areas. Winters in Southeast Asia, mainly in wetlands and grasslands.
How to spot
Patience is key due to its skulking nature. Listen for its distinctive reeling song, which sounds like an insect. Look for subtle movements in tall grass or reeds, often very low to the ground.
When to spot
Breeding season (summer) in its northern range, and during migration (spring/autumn) along its flyways. Present in wintering grounds from autumn to spring.
This warbler is known for its insect-like, 'ticking' or 'reeling' song, which can be surprisingly loud for such a small, skulking bird.
