Wilkins's Bunting is a large, robust finch-like bird with a massive, conical bill, endemic to the remote Tristan da Cunha archipelago. It is typically dull brown with streaking.
Where to spot
Endemic to Nightingale and Middle Islands in the Tristan da Cunha archipelago, South Atlantic Ocean. Found in Phylica arborea woodland.
How to spot
Look for it foraging on the ground or in the canopy of Phylica trees. Its enormous bill is the most distinctive and unmistakable feature.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Observation requires special permits and challenging travel to these remote islands.
It possesses one of the largest and most powerful bills among passerines, evolved to crack the extremely hard seeds of specific island trees.
