Spotted
The Grey Thornbill is a small, inconspicuous thornbill with mostly grey plumage, making it blend well into its surroundings. It is found in the high-altitude forests of New Guinea.
Where to spot
Endemic to the montane forests of the central highlands of New Guinea, preferring higher elevations and dense forest.
How to spot
Look for its small size and grey plumage. Often found foraging actively in the mid-to-upper canopy, sometimes joining mixed-species flocks. Listen for its soft, high-pitched calls.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during cooler parts of the day when foraging activity is higher.
Like other thornbills, it primarily feeds on small insects, which it meticulously gleans from foliage and bark, playing an important role in insect control.
