Swinhoe's Babbler is an attractive species with a rufous crown and pale underparts, named after the British naturalist Robert Swinhoe. It is a secretive bird, preferring dense forest habitats.
Where to spot
Endemic to the island of Hainan, China. It inhabits lowland and montane evergreen forests, preferring dense undergrowth and bamboo thickets.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, often repeated whistled calls. Look for its rufous crown and pale underparts as it moves quietly through dense foliage near the ground.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the breeding season, usually in the mornings.
