The Grey Bunting, also known as the Japanese Grey Bunting, is a somewhat dull-plumaged bunting found in East Asia. Males have a grey head and upperparts, with paler underparts.

Where to spot

Breeds in parts of Russia (Sakhalin, Kuril Islands) and Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu). Winters in southern Japan and China. Found in open broadleaf and mixed forests, and forest edges.

How to spot

Look for it in forest undergrowth or at edges. The male's plain grey head and upperparts distinguish it. Listen for its short, clear song.

Best observed during the breeding season (spring and summer) when males are singing. Also during migration (spring and autumn) when they can be found in more open areas.
