The Collared Towhee is a distinctive ground-sparrow of Mexico, characterized by its prominent black collar, rufous cap, and olive-brown back. It is a resident of montane forests and shrublands.
Where to spot
Endemic to the highlands of central and southern Mexico, primarily in Oaxaca, Puebla, and Veracruz. It inhabits humid pine-oak forests, cloud forest edges, and dense scrubby areas, typically at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Look for its striking black collar, rufous cap, and a white chin. It typically forages on the ground or in low shrubs. Listen for its distinctive song, which is often a series of high-pitched whistles or trills.
When to spot
Resident year-round within its range. Most active during the early morning and late afternoon.
This species often forages in pairs or small family groups, meticulously scratching through leaf litter on the forest floor.
