Spotted
The Scaly-breasted Wren-babbler is a secretive ground-dweller distinguished by its intricately scaled plumage on the breast and belly. It is typically found in dense, damp forest undergrowth.
Where to spot
Known only from a very restricted range in northern Sumatra, Indonesia. It inhabits dense montane forests, often in areas with thick moss and ferns.
How to spot
Listen for its soft, whistled calls. Look for a small, brownish bird moving furtively on the forest floor. The scaled plumage is difficult to see without close views, so rely on its calls and general shape.
When to spot
Resident species, observable year-round. Its elusive nature means patience is required, with early mornings being the most promising time for vocalizations.
The 'scaly' pattern on its breast provides excellent camouflage, helping it disappear among the dappled light and shadows of the forest floor.
