Spotted
The Comoro Drongo is a sleek, all-black bird with a glossy sheen and a characteristically forked tail. It is an agile aerial hunter, often seen perched prominently before swooping to catch insects. This species is unique to the Comoros islands.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Comoro Islands, found on several of the larger islands. It inhabits forests, woodlands, and cultivated areas with scattered trees.
How to spot
Look for its all-black, glossy plumage and deeply forked tail. It often perches conspicuously. Listen for its varied and often harsh calls. Careful observation of tail shape can help distinguish it from other drongo species if they occur together.
When to spot
Active during daylight hours, observable year-round as it is a resident species. Early morning and late afternoon are generally best.
Each of the four main Comoro Islands has its own distinct drongo species or subspecies, highlighting the archipelago's rich biodiversity.
