Spotted
The Golden-collared Honeycreeper is a stunning and somewhat elusive bird. Males are largely black with a brilliant iridescent blue back and a prominent golden-orange collar. Females are duller.
Where to spot
Humid montane forests on the western slopes of the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador, and the eastern slopes in parts of Peru.
How to spot
Look for it in the mid-to-upper canopy, often in mixed-species flocks. The male's golden collar against the black body is a striking and definitive field mark.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early morning activity.
